Some of my Pure Alaska Omega Wild Alaskan Salmon oil softgels appear cloudy, why is this?

By Dustin Moore August 10, 2017

If Pure Alaska Omega Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil product has been in your cold car, refrigerator, or freezer you may observe solidification or cloudiness of the softgel, also called “winterization.” Fats in nature have different melting and solidification points. Some fats can also be observed within our Pure Alaska Omega softgels at room temperature as this is a natural fish oil which contains saturated fatty acids like palmitic acid (C16:0). A step called “Winterization” is often used when making refined fish oils which involves a cooling of the fish oil to isolate and then separate stearins and saturated fats from the oil. Because our oil is natural and unrefined, these fats which are naturally present will remain as part of the oil and are considered harmless. Bringing your softgel up to room temperature will minimize cloudiness as the melting points of the different chains of natural triglyceride fatty acids contained within are achieved.
